The popular 3.1 mile Cochran Shoals Trail runs along the west bank of the Chattahoochee River within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Center. Check out the addresses and map on the Cumberland Trails website page for the trail. There are entrances from Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill road. The 6.4 mile West Palisades Trail gives visitors a chance to explore part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. The Battery Atlanta Walking Trail is a mile-and-a-half loop around the attractions at the Battery, including the shops and restaurants, and Truist Park, home stadium of the Atlanta Braves. The eastern portion provides access to the Chattahoochee National Recreation Center trailhead at Paces Mill. The western part of the trail goes by Cumberland Mall, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and the Galleria Convention Center. The 4-mile Akers Mill Trail is split into two sections by the Rottenwood Creek Trail. The trailhead for the Bob Callan Trail is at Interstate North Parkway and Cumberland Boulevard, and the trail connects the Cumberland area with the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. The 4-mile Bob Callan Trail is part of the Rottenwood Creek Trail, which is in turn one of the priority projects on Cobb County’s Greenways and Trails Master Plan. Round trip distance for all caches along the route from either parking lot is about 2 1/4 miles.The following trails are described in fuller detail on their website. The CRNRA Cochran Shoals parking lot has a $3.00 daily parking fee. Note: The caches along the Bob Callan/Rottenwood Creek Trail and the Akers Mill Trail are best accessed by foot or bicycle from parking lots located at the north end of the Bob Callan/Rottenwood Creek Trail or the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area Cochran Shoals at Eugene Gunby Road. The cache is a cammo'ed pill bottle located off the ground and contains only the log so bring your own pencil. GPS accuracy is poor in this area so use the hint if needed. ![]() It’s also paved, flat, and has limited road crossings. So for bikers or long-distance runners it’s a lifesaver. And if you want to get technical, it then connects up to another 33-mile trail from there. The cache is located only about 850 feet from the parking lot so it is a short easy hike. The Silver Comet is an almost 62-mile trail that goes from Atlanta (Smyrna, technically) all the way to the Alabama state border. The "Bob Callan" section of the trail offers few, if any, viable locations for a regular cache and the CNRA, where caches are not allowed, begins a short distance from the cache location so we decided to make this one of the "streak extender" series. There is paved parking lot at the trailhead. The trail follows the creek on down to the banks of the Chattahoochee River. ![]() ![]() Shortly after passing under I-285, the trail enters the Chattahoochee National Recreation area where it is known as the Rottenwood Creek Trail. It is a paved trail that winds along Rottenwood Creek under a portion of the Interstate 75/285 interchange. Beautiful sights/sounds of the Chattahoochee River & Rottenwood Creek. At the trailhead it is identified as the Bob Callan Trail. There is a little known but delightful trail along Rottenwood Creek that recently opened.
